First match at Arena Castelao
The newly renovated Arena is home to 64,000 seated spectators
Two matches was played at the newly renovated Arena Castelao on Sunday, 27th January. Last month, President Dilma Rousseff inaugurated the new giant football arena, which is the first of the 12 World Cup stadiums that is ready for use. On Sunday, the first two matches was played in the local football cup, Copa do Nordeste. Prior to the matches, the two former world champions Ronaldo and Bebeto took part in a ceremony together with sport minister Aldo Rebelo and a number of FIFA representatives.
Aldo Rebelo spoke at the ceremony:
"The state of Ceara receives today a stadium as great as its
tradition in football and presence in the national scenario. We did
a visit here with foreign journalists and they were all very
impressed particularly with the cities from the north-east and
their culture, food and friendliness.
In Fortaleza, the population will benefit from the legacy in terms of infrastructure, urban mobility, income, business opportunities, jobs generated, etc."
The matches went according to plan and Arena Castelao is now ready for Confederations Cup this summer and for the mayor event - the 2014 World Cup.
In the first match, Fortaleza drew nil-nil with Sports while the former Manchester United and Brazilian national team midfielder, Kleberson, scored the first goal at Arena Castelao and, thus, helped Bahia to a one-goal victory against the home team Ceará.
